Managing Aspen woodlands for multiple benefits

Managing Aspen woodlands for multiple benefits

25 March 2011, Carrbridge

Aspen often occurs with other broadleaves, especially birch, and occasionally with conifers. This workshop will consider the value of managing these mixed stands to deliver a range of environmental and economic gains.

The morning indoor session and afternoon field visit will be facilitated by John Parrott and Simon Lockwood (Scottish Native Woods), Colin Edwards (Forest Research), Amanda Calvert (Highland Birchwoods) and Matthew O'Brien (Highland Forestry).

Topics to be covered include:

  • enhancing biodiversity associated with aspen
  • thinning regimes to encourage regeneration of Aspen in mixed stands
  • use of brash and temporary fencing to protect tree regeneration
  • management of deadwood for biodiversity
  • selective thinning of stands for firewood production
  • demonstration of coring auger to age standing trees
  • demonstration of Alstor low-impact forwarder
  • demonstration of Japa firewood processor
