Renewable Communities

19 March 2011, Glencanisp Website: www.usegreenheat.co.uk

The Assynt Foundation was established ahead of the landmark community buy-out of the Glencanisp and Drumrunie Estates in the North-West Highlands of Scotland in June 2005. This purchase transferred ownership of 44,400 acres of stunningly beautiful natural land to the community of Assynt.

Following a development appraisal undertaken in 2006, it was decided to seek substantial funding to redevelop the Lodge. One aspect of the redevelopment was to improve energy and heat efficiency, which has been achieved by installing a woodchip heating system and solar thermal panels . This has also supported additional business development by using locally produced and supplied woodchip.

This event will help guide you from the idea to installation and increase your community capacity to take your project forward. The morning session consists of presentations which cover everything from the type of business structure your community needs, through project design, to how to finance the installation . In the afternoon you will have the opportunity to look at the renewables installed at Glencanisp and to talk to Assynt Foundation members about their experience.
