Supplying woodfuel

Forestry owners, farmers and landowners are among businesses taking advantage of the fast growing market for woodfuel, and the increasing number of commercial opportunities along the wood fuel supply chain, including co-operative working.

Both the Renewable Heat Incentive and Renewables Obligation now have sustainability criteria attached to them, meaning that end users wishing to claim these incentives can only source fuel from woodfuel suppliers who meet the relevant criteria. For more information on sustainability requirements click here.

Supplying to the Public Sector: Suppliers are encouraged to register with the Public Contracts Scotland (PCS) advertising portal to be provided with electronic notification of public sector contracts that are of interest to them. Registration is free.

The Scottish Government's  Biomass Energy Supply Agreements have been awarded, see results.

The Scottish Government's Invitation to Tender for the Supply of Biomass Wood Fuel Pellets has been issued via Public Contracts Scotland and the OJEU.   Click here to access the documents. Deadline for submissions 23rd May 2013.

Key considerations for wood fuel suppliers

This brief guide covers the key issues for wood fuel supply. These include: the benefits of meeting demand locally (it's efficient, cost effective and carbon lean), meeting the requirements of wood fuel heating systems using fuel standards, capital investment and customer service. You can also download our wood fuel supply publication (PDF).

Harvesting wood for fuel

Raw wood material

Woodfuel comes from traditional forestry, energy crops, timber co-products, recycled wood and waste wood. Undermanaged woodlands on farms and estates also offer increasing opportunities for wood fuel supply.
