Chimneys and Flues

These heating appliances all require the installation of a flue. If you have an existing masonry chimney, it should be lined to prevent a build up of tar deposits or of loose stones and mortar which can lead to smoke problems or risk of fire. The easiest option is to insert a stainless steel, insulated, flexible liner down the chimney which is connected to the stove pipe. Alternatively, masonry chimneys can be lined with ceramic liners by opening the chimney up from the outside wall, or the chimney can be lined by inserting an inflatable mould in the flue and pumping insulating concrete mix around this mould.

These insulated liners means that the flue warms up faster, creating a better draught, and a warm chimney will reduce tar deposits, as will adjusting settings of the air controls. Stove suppliers will be able to provide more information on installation.
