Sawmill Case Study: Scottish Woods

In 2006 Scottish Wood installed a new log boiler system to provide constant heat and hot water to a brand new timber kiln, company office, and domestic residence.

The owners wanted to make best use of all timber onsite. They were producing a lot of slab wood which could not be converted into saleable boards. They decided to put the material to good use, improving the return to their business through better, faster kiln drying of the core business product. The log-boiler also provided heating to their onsite buildings.

Key Benefits of this Woodfuel Installation

  • Since installing the boiler the timber drying capacity of the business has increased tenfold. The boiler has the capacity to dry a larger volume of timber in a purpose built kiln.
  • The speed of the kiln means that the business can respond more quickly to customer orders.
  • When the kiln has spare capacity it produces kiln-dried firewood, a more valuable product than air-dried firewood.
  • The business has found an efficient use of a slabwood.
  • Cost saving, by reducing electricity consumption.
  • Office and domestic hot water also provided.
  • Large CO2 saving.
  • The log boiler uses slabwood without the need to chip.
  • Business has expanded as a consequence of installing thelog boiler.
