Large scale systems 500kW and greater

Equipment: Larger systems for schools, hospitals, factories and district heating schemes are best heated with woodchips or pellets. Boilers at this level of output are more flexible in their woodchip quality requirements than smaller boilers. Coarser and wetter chips can be burnt, which means that it is much easier to find suitable woodchips.

Storage: At this scale of heating plant, the storage requirements for the fuel will need very careful planning, and some form of bunker or silo will be needed. In the case of a newly built site, the most effective storage solution is to build an underground or basement storage facility, adjoining a basement boiler room. The wood fuel can then be tipped directly into the store, through a hatch at ground level.

An alternative arrangement is to receive containerised woodchips. The delivery lorry lowers a container of woodchips into position and the container is fitted directly to the auger feed mechanism.
