Grampian Biomass Working Group

Chair: Iain Todd, Renewables Champion, Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group
Interim Secretary: Eric Wells, Renewable Energy Development Co-ordinator, Aberdeenshire Council

Introduction

The group was created in 2006 to promote the development of a biomass supply chain in the Grampian area. Since then the region has benefitted from a significant Scottish Government grants to promote biomass supply chain growth.

The group is supported by Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group, Forestry Commission Scotland, Aberdeenshire Council and Aberdeen City Council.

Aims and objectives

Having initially focussed on biomass supply, our current aim is to promote the development of biomass demand in the Grampian region and beyond. Our objectives include:

  • Promotion of biomass, both in our own right and through Scottish Renewables.
  • Adopting a higher profile with local media, such as the Press and Journal.
  • Continuing to maximise our involvement with the All Energy Conference in May each year.
  • Persuading planning officers to promote the growth of biomass in the region.
  • Investigating the potential for attracting a boiler manufacturer to set up a factory in the region.

Meetings

We meet twice a year at different locations throughout the region. Where possible, we incorporate site visits to biomass projects at each meeting.

Presentations from previous GBWG meetings are available here.
